Facebook removes tattoos but leaves rasism and sexism online

I believe in free speach. However there are legal regulations to that, for example when it comes to inciting hatred. On top of that, having the right to say/post demeaning things about minorities does not mean you have to, specially in a community. A forum sets its own rules for acceptable behaviour and since Facebook claims wanting to do so, I wanted to see if Facebook thinks it is okay to call minorities such as jews/black/gays goatf*ckers.

I found this picture, spread recently by several facebook pages, one with 1.8 million followers, and reported it:

A picture Facebook says is okay according to their standards.

Facebook got back to me and told me it is okay:

A tweep, @fjii86, reported a group saying “All women are whores”. Same result there.

So – anything goes in the facebook community? Support groups for rapists slandering their victims for example. So why the report system in the first place? And what does it mean when posts like the ones above are kept on, while pictures of mothers breastfeeding their children, or of cancer victims that have gotten tatoos covering the scars are removed? (At least according to this fairly large facebook page, gawker and Huffington Post among others).

Picture that is claimed to have been repeatedly removed by facebook.

  1. Well, I am not surprised, FB is mirroring the American standard for nudity. It’s a shame what passes and what doesn’t. There are numerous examples of this. Good thing that you are bringing attention to this subject. We may not win this one, but we can speak our minds.
